Britten Norman celebrates 70th anniversary
The business was conceived as an aircraft modification company before a gap in the market was identified for a high payload, short sector, STOL aircraft capable of operating anywhere with little infrastructure or support.
2024 will see the first all UK-built Islander being delivered from the Britten-Norman Isle of Wight manufacturing base.

John Britten and Desmond Norman started their business in 1954 on completion of their apprenticeships at De Havilland. Today, Britten-Norman is celebrating its platinum anniversary, marking 70 years since the company was founded.

The business was conceived as an aircraft modification company before the two entrepreneurs identified a gap in the market for a high payload, short sector, short take off and landing aircraft capable of operating in some of the most remote parts of the world with the minimum of infrastructure or support. So, 10 years later, the ubiquitous Islander was born.

Chief Executive William Hynett comments: "This is a very important year for Britten-Norman. 2024 will see the first all UK-built Islander being delivered from our Isle of Wight manufacturing base. This first aircraft will be delivered as we celebrate a rare milestone in British aviation, the 70th anniversary of the formation of one of Britain's most iconic aircraft brands."

We will celebrate our platinum anniversary with a range of commemorative products and events which will be unveiled in the weeks leading up to the anniversary of our founding in July.
