The Ka-226T, developed by Russian Helicopters, has begun flight tests at the Mil and Kamov flight test complex of the National Helicopter Engineering Center in Moscow.

Due to its adaptability for high altitude flights, the project has the working title ‘Climber’. It has a new airframe and fuselage design with increased aerodynamic characteristics. The carrying system of the machine has also been updated; the Ka-226T has received a new main rotor column, blades and main gearbox, and a shock-resistant fuel system has been installed.

It is also equipped with a complex of flight-navigation and radio communication equipment. Optional extras include oxygen equipment, ballonets, air conditioning and a heating system.

The Ka-226T has a coaxial rotor design which provides controllability in rarefied air, improved resistance to crosswinds, a high climb rate and the ability to take off and land at high altitude locations.

Andrey Boginsky, general director of Russian Helicopters, reported on the progress to modernise the helicopter during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. It was presented for the first time at the MAKS-2021international aerospace show, with the international premiere taking place at the Dubai Airshow 2021.

“The newest Ka-226T is the first helicopter in Russia where all design documentation was carried out digitally. This made it possible to significantly reduce the time for creating it and start flight tests in a short time,” says Boginsky.
