Overview

The Bell 407 is a four-blade, single-engine, civil utility helicopter. A derivative of the Bell 206L-4 LongRanger, it is wider with a larger cabin window area. It has a four-blade rotor with a composite hub and tailboom.

Bell began the development programme in 1993, and used a LongRanger as the 407 demonstrator, modified with moulded fairings to represent the 407's wider fuselage.

A concept demonstrator was first flown on 21 April, 1994 and the programme was revealed at Heli-Expo in January 1995. Two prototypes took their first flights on 29 June and 13 July that year, and the first production airframe flew on 10 November.

The 407 is powered by a Rolls-Royce M250-C47 turboshaft that increased the MTOW and improved hot/high performance.

Transport Canada certificated the 407 on 9 February, 1996 and the FAA some two weeks later. Full production began in 1996 at Bell’s Mirabel plant in Quebec; the first customer delivery was also made that year.

The 407 GX is the Garmin G1000H-equipped version. Announced and debuted on 6 March, 2011 it is offered in corporate, HEMS, offshore transport and parapublic configurations. FAA certification was issued on 10 October, 2011, then came Transport Canada and, shortly after, EASA on 28 November, 2011. The first delivery went to Mexico on 12 February, 2012.

The 407 GXP is an upgrade of the GX with greater MTOW, additional avionics functions and a R-R M250-C47B/8 power plant. It was announced on 3 March, 2015.

Bell established an assembly agreement with the Ural Plant of Civil Aviation at Ekaterinburg, Russia in May 2015. It did the same with the Shaanxi Aviation Industry Development Group and Xian Helicopter for the GXP in China at the end of 2016.

The 407 GXi is a further development of the GX with Garmin G1000H NXi avionics and a dual-channel FADEC Rolls-Royce M250-C47E/4. The prototype was converted from the 407 GXP and production started on 24 April, 2017. It was announced on 26 February, 2018 having been certified by Transport Canada. FAAA validation followed on 9 October, 2018 and the first delivery was made to Chile on 29 October.
